Already on the road to Vászoly the views will leave you speechless.

From Balatonudvari, an old winding road with panoramic views, lined with ancient beech trees and vineyards, leads to the fairytale village, where springs, streams and thatched-roof houses await you. The most famous attraction of the ancient settlement is the Vászolyi spring-fed-lake, but there's also a 200-year-old pálinka distillery, a restaurant offering reimagined classics and a community office.

Located in a valley rich in springs, the area of Vászoly has been inhabited since ancient times.

Archaeologists have found traces of Stone Age and Bronze Age villages, Roman dwellings, the remains of tombs and coins from the 3rd and 4th centuries. The name of the settlement dates back to the Árpád period and is first mentioned in a charter of 1082, while the name Vászoly probably comes from the name of Prince Vazul of Árpád, father of Andrew I, who may have had estates in this area.

Later documents mention the former church of the village as the Church of the Holy Cross, vineyards and water mills on the brook. In the late 1700s, the millers then dammed the watercourses into a lake, thus creating the fabulous lake, a true oasis of calm in the Balaton highlands. An exception to this is the Vászolyi Summer cultural event series, when the water stage hosts musical and theatrical performances.

One of the watercourses that feeds the lake, the St James' Spring, which locals believe has healing powers, is named after one of Jesus' apostles.

It has a limestone socket, built by local craftsmen, on which the two shells, the symbol of the eponymous saint, are placed. This is where the branch of the St James pilgrimage route in Hungary that links the Benedictine monasteries - starting from the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany and ending at the Church of St James in Lébény - passes through. Walking along the lake, you will also find a “kukolla”, or pálinka distillery hut, built in 1806.
